Our association was established in 1991 to provide family-based care to children who have lost family care and to raise independent individuals in the long term with gradual support programs. SOS Children's Villages has been operating in 135 countries since 1949 as one of the world's largest, independent, non-profit social development organizations. SOS Children's Villages are defined as a non-governmental development organization that provides family-oriented care to children, prevents children from being separated from their families with its preventive works, advocates for children's rights, and establishes families especially for children who have lost family-based care. More than 73,000 children and youth live in 491 SOS Children's Villages, located in 22 countries in the USA, 47 in Africa, 35 in Europe, and 31 countries in Asia and Oceania. TRNC SOS Children's Village Association has been under the umbrella of International SOS Children's Villages since its establishment. Our association, which started its activities in 1993 with six children, has given care to 294 children and young people in a family-based care program since its establishment. In our SOS Nursery and Kindergarden, more than 1000 pre-school children received education. With the Family Strengthening Project, which was initiated in 2005 as a preventive effort, 259 families and 741 children have been supported so far. Girne Youth Development Center (GIGEM) which was established in 2017 to support young people and facilitate their participation in economic life, has provided support to many young people so far. Our association, which gathers all the works, which are carried out via complementary units and services, under a single program, also carries out advocacy works for the recognition of the rights of all children and the reduction of rights violations throughout the island. It is the worlds’s one of the biggest, independent and non-profit social development organisation.
