Cause description
The inner garden of the SOS Children's Village Association Nicosia campus is the area where SOS Families spend most of their time outside of their homes. The inner garden is considered as an area where SOS Families interact with each other and where children socialize in the context of neighborly relations. While children have the opportunity to play, chat, study and spend free time in these areas, SOS Mothers and SOS Aunts, who play the role of parents, also find the opportunity to have fun with their children in this area. "Will you play with me?" project aims to renovate the old playgrounds in the inner garden of the Nicosia Children's Village campus, and to transform into modern and safe new playgrounds and to arrange the picnic area in order to enable spending more productive time in the inner garden. The playgrounds and picnic area, which have not been extensively renovated since 1993 due to funding problems, will be reorganized, therefore the inner garden wil be renovated and enable children to benefit from a safer and more modern environment. We can list the materials needed within the scope of this project as follows: • 4 different playgrounds • 12 picnic tables • 1 canopy 1. Project Outputs: Free play time supports healthy brain development of children, helps them cope with simple and complicated emotions and establish healthy communication. It helps them form new friendships and cope with stress. It develops their creativity and enables them to be what they want to be by imagination; astronaut, cook, scientist, whatever they want. In addition to all these, it helps them to be physically stronger and healthier. Children who can play freely in a child-friendly environment have many physical, emotional, social, mental and creative gains. Physical Gains: • Decreases obesity rate: Children who spend at least one hour playing outside have a lower probability of obesity. Strengthens the immune system: As children spend time playing outside, there is less risk of getting sick because free play helps strengthen the immune system of children. • Strengthens school success: Giving the chance to play outside for even 20 minutes before starting homework or work helps the child focus to his/her studies better. Allowing children to play a little when they get stuck in the lessons increases the possibility of solving it more easily when they come back. • It reduces anxiety and helps them sleep comfortably: Playing games reduces the anxiety level of children. It is claimed that children who spend time playing outside fall asleep more easily, go to bed earlier and wake up more vigorously than children who spend most of their time indoors. Emotional Gains: • Strengthens children's self-esteem and self-confidence – When children do activities that they have not tried before or that challenge them, children experience a sense of self-esteem and self-confidence when they can overcome it. • They experience emotional experiences that they did not experience in different situations – Free playtime helps children develop necessary life skills (humor, tolerance, improvisation, patience, etc.). • It helps them to overcome their traumas: Playing games helps children to express their feelings freely and to share their feelings. • Helps them develop stronger bonds with their families: Children not only want to play with their friends but also with their families. When they have difficulty in any activity in the playground, getting help from their families helps them develop strong emotional bonds and trust relationships with their families. Social Gains: • They learn to manage the complex social environment: Children learn to get along with others, social norms and independence while playing with each other. • They learn to listen: When children discover a new game and its rules, they have to listen carefully to what other children have to say. They learn to ask, negotiate and reach agreements about things that are not clear. • They learn to develop cooperation: Many children's games do not involve winners and losers, but rather activities for a common goal. To achieve this common goal, children learn to work together and help each other. Mental and Creative Achievements: • Enriches critical thinking: When children strengthen their imaginational playing skills, their critical thinking and problem solving skills also develop. They get an idea of what works, what doesn't, when to keep trying, and when to stop. • Increases attention span: Free play helps children focus and increases their attention span. Positive development can be observed in children who have difficulty of sitting for a long time or dealing with academic assignments. • Enhanced motor skills: An increase in motor skills has been observed in children who spend time playing outside. By climbing, swinging and digging they get the chance to test their own bodies, which helps develop their motor skills. • Labeling and prejudice are reduced, leadership skills are strengthened.
