Cause description
Wildlife Hospital is established within the Cyprus Wildlife Research Institute. The Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre within the Institute provides services to the Cyprus Sea Life Centre and animal shelters. Among the objectives of the Institute are the provision of services such as treatment, rehabilitation and care for the injured or orphaned wild animals in need. Approximately 1000 wild animals are served annually. In 2020, 779 animals brought to the hospital and 65 of them were operated. While operating mammals or reptiles with the use of injection anaesthesia causes no problems, injection anaesthesia is risky for birds. Furthermore, 58 of the 65 animals that we operated in 2020 are different bird species. Gas anaesthesia is a safer anaesthesia method, especially for birds. The gas is given by mixing with oxygen during the surgery. Compared to injection anaesthesia, the gas anaesthesia method provides the opportunity to increase or decrease the amount of anaesthesia given to the animal during the operation according to its current situation. The anatomical and physiological features of birds are different from those of mammals. Birds have a much less body weight and therefore the use of injection anaesthesia is risky. Birds also have a much higher lung capacity than mammals, and because gas exchange in their lungs is much faster, a quick response can be obtained from the anaesthesia given by inhalation and the anaesthesia setting. Anticholinergic drugs given during anaesthesia in mammals cause condensation of respiratory tract secretions and difficulty in breathing in birds. In the veterinary field, it has become an accepted procedure to use inhalation (gas) anaesthesia to birds rather than injection anaesthesia. Since Wildlife Hospital does not have the gas anaesthesia device and equipment required for the operation of these birds, we have to perform these operations in a private veterinary clinic in Nicosia. This situation causes wild animals to be under fear and stress while being transported to Nicosia on the road, as well as being exposed to the risk of infection during transportation. In addition, due to the additional cost of surgeries performed in private clinics, treatment costs are very high. For these reasons, it is necessary to purchase a gas anaesthesia device to be used in the existing operating room at Wildlife Hospital.
